Pegasus Bridge was the first to be taken after the invasion on June 6, 1944. British gliders captured the bridge in about 10 minutes shortly after midnight. It crosses the Caen Canal near the Orne River at Benouville. The Canal was important because it connects to the English Channel. This bridge is actually a copy of the original, which was replaced a few years ago because it was too narrow for modern trucks.
