The Inner Game of Management

Abstract:
Having the title and necessary skills may not be enough to be an effective manager.  It also is necessary to play the "inner game of management." Like all games, this one is played on the surface level and on the inner level.  The inner game takes place in the mind of the manager and involves how well the manager deals with 3 basic psychological needs: self-esteem, control, and being liked.  Symptoms that may indicate a failure to master the inner game of management include: 1.  the tendency to emphasize performance rather than supervisory activities, 2.  failure to make decisions, 3.  competing with employees, and 4.  poor choices in hiring people.  Steps to help the manager master the inner game are outlined.
