Tired of the Windoze environment? Miss your UNIX machine? Miss all those nifty utilities? Want to run X-windows? Don't want to install Linux on your laptop? Try the Cygnus Solutions cygwin project http://www.cygnus.com click the cygwin32 button. This subsystem allows you to operate in a unix work-alike environment under win95/98 or (even better) under WinNT. The magic is a dll that maps the Unix api into the win32 api. You get all your old friends back: vi, sed, grep, awk, tcl, bash, gcc, gdb, and lots more. You can also scrounge up a compatible version of emacs and perl, the X11R6 libraries, etc. I use it to do programming for the win32 environment and to maintain code that has to run under Unix and Windows. I've also used it to take unix/linux source code off of the net, recompile it and run it on my laptop. Config files work most of the time. Way cool tools. This company is so cool that, after collecting all of the money from its IPO, the first thing Red Hat did was to buy Cygnus.
